Small Batch Production: Why it Matters

Walk into any big-box retailer and you’ll see rows of identical candles, produced by the thousands in massive factories. Then there’s us - a mother-daughter team in our Sydney studio, hand-pouring candles in small batches of 20-30 at a time.

You might wonder: why does this matter? In a world obsessed with scale and efficiency, why do we deliberately keep our production small?

The answer is simple: because quality, care, and authenticity can’t be mass-produced.

What Does “Small Batch” Actually Mean?

Small batch production means we make limited quantities of product at a time, rather than churning out thousands in a factory setting. For us, this means:

  • Pouring 20-30 candles per session
  • Testing each batch for quality
  • Hand-labeling every single candle
  • Packaging each order ourselves with care

It’s the opposite of mass production. And yes, it means we sometimes sell out. But that’s a trade-off we’re willing to make for the quality we can guarantee.

Quality Control You Can Trust

When you make thousands of candles at once, quality control becomes a statistical game. A certain percentage of defects is considered ‘acceptable’. Not to us.

With small batch production, we personally oversee every single candle.

Before any candle leaves our studio, we check:

  • The wick is perfectly centered
  • The wax has set evenly without air bubbles
  • The label is straight and secure
  • The wood wick is trimmed to the perfect length

If a candle doesn’t meet our standards, it doesn’t get sold. Simple as that. When your daughter or your mum is right there watching, you don’t cut corners.

We’ve caught issues that would have slipped through in a large-scale operation - a batch where the fragrance oil didn’t mix properly, wicks that weren’t quite right for the vessel size, labels that didn’t adhere perfectly in humid weather. Because we make small quantities, we can inspect everything and make adjustments immediately.

Flexibility to Improve and Innovate

When you produce in massive quantities, you’re locked in. A fragrance that isn’t quite right? Too bad - you’ve got 10,000 units to sell through before you can adjust.

Small batches give us the freedom to continuously improve.

Sustainability Through Small Batches

Large-scale production often means large-scale waste.

Overproduction leads to excessive inventory that eventually gets discarded. Defects get written off. Packaging materials are ordered in such bulk that changes become cost-prohibitive, even if better options emerge.

Small batch production is inherently more sustainable:

  • We produce based on actual demand, not projections
  • Less waste from testing and adjustments
  • Easier to switch to better packaging options
  • No overstock sitting in warehouses
  • Tighter inventory control means fresher ingredients

We can also source ingredients more thoughtfully. Rather than being locked into massive contracts with suppliers, we can seek out the best quality natural wax, the most sustainably harvested fragrance ingredients, and work with smaller Australian suppliers when possible.

The Human Touch

Perhaps most importantly, small batch production keeps our business personal.

Every candle is touched by human hands - our hands - multiple times throughout the process. From pouring the wax to trimming the wick to packing your order with a handwritten thank-you note, there’s a direct connection between us and you.

When you’re a mother-daughter team working side by side, this matters even more. We’re not just business partners; we’re family. The candles we make represent our relationship, our values, and our commitment to creating something meaningful together.

You can’t get that from a factory line.

The Bigger Picture

In an age of same-day delivery and infinite choice, small batch production is a quiet rebellion. It says that quality matters more than quantity. That care matters more than convenience. That authenticity matters more than the scale.

Every time we pour a new batch of candles, we’re making a choice. We’re choosing to do things the slow way, the careful way, the right way. We’re choosing to create something we’re proud to put our names on - both our names, mother and daughter, together.

And when you choose to support a small batch business like ours, you’re making a choice too. You’re voting for quality over quantity, for people over corporations, for intention over mass production.

That’s why small batch production matters. Not just to us - but to everyone who believes that how we make things is just as important as what we make.
